Bus fare adjustment decision likely tomorrow: Road transport minister
The minister said discussions on fare determination have already taken place, but no final decision has yet been made
A final decision on adjusting fares for long-haul and metropolitan buses and minibuses may be taken tomorrow (23 April) following the recent increase in diesel prices, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam said.
The minister made the remarks to journalists at the Secretariat today (22 April) after a meeting on fare adjustment in response to the fuel price hike.
He said discussions on fare determination have already taken place, but no final decision has yet been made.
Reviews are ongoing with relevant stakeholders, and a decision is expected to be finalised soon.
After the government raised diesel prices by Tk15 per litre on 18 April, initiatives were taken to revise bus fares.
A meeting of the fare rescheduling committee was held at the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) on the night of 19 April.
However, despite the passage of three days since that meeting, no official notification on fare adjustment has been issued.
According to BRTA sources, the fare determination committee has recommended an increase of Tk0.22 per kilometre.
Following discussions at the ministry level, the final fare may be set with slight adjustments to that proposed rate.
A source present at the meeting said the recommendation was discussed again today, and the final fare structure is expected to reflect minor revisions to the proposed increase.
