Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) officials have conducted drives at various bus counters in the capital's Abdullahpur area to check if there were any irregularities regarding charging excessive fares and carrying extra passengers by transport companies.

A BRTA team led by Executive Magistrate Mohamamad Sajid Anwar conducted the drives today (27 March), during which Sheba Green Line Paribahan and Islam Paribahan were fined Tk10,000 for charging extra fares, reads a press release sent by BRTA.

"BRTA will continue its drives to make people's Eid journey safe and hassle-free," said the executive magistrate.

During this time, BRTA officials returned some of the extra fares collected from passengers back to them.

During the drive, Kotalipara Paribahan was fined Tk5,000 for not showing the chart of fares, while Ovi Paribahan was fined Tk5,000 for taking passengers without giving them any tickets.

According to the press release, a total of Tk30,000 was collected as fines in four cases.

During the drive, BRTA officials talked with the passengers about their experiences and warned the bus counters so that they do not charge extra fares, provide tickets properly and do not create congestion on the road, said the press release.
