A 22-year-old tourist was accidentally shot dead while handling a locally made hunting rifle during a trip to a remote area of Alikadam upazila in Bandarban, police said.

The incident took place yesterday morning (21 July) in the remote hills of Kurukpata union under Alikadam, according to SI Ramesh of Alikadam Police Station.

Quoting preliminary findings, SI Ramesh said a group of five tourists travelled to the area on Saturday (19 July). On Monday morning, while playing around among themselves, they got hold of a single-barrel gun used by locals for hunting.

"They were playing with the rifle when a bullet was accidentally discharged, hitting one of them and causing his death," said the officer.

The deceased was identified as Toha Bin Amin, 22, a resident of Shantibagh area under Demra Police Station in Dhaka.

Several local tourist guides, seeking anonymity, told TBS that the group had hiked for about two hours from the Kurukpata bazaar area to a place called Menthok. There, at a Mro community's jum house, the tourists reportedly found a hunting rifle and began "playing" with it.

"They were messing around with the gun, testing it, when a bullet suddenly fired and hit Toha Bin Amin. He died on the spot," one of the guides said.

Upon receiving the news, a team of police recovered the body and brought it back to the upazila headquarters, SI Ramesh confirmed.

He added that the body is currently being held at the Alikadam Police Station and will be sent to Bandarban Sadar Hospital for autopsy today (22 July).
