Up to Tk25,000 tax rebate for returns filed by September
Minimum Tk3,000 penalty for filing after Dec, Tk5,000 after Mar
Individual taxpayers who file their income tax returns by 30 September will receive a tax rebate of up to Tk25,000, while those submitting returns after 31 December will face financial penalties under a new incentive framework introduced by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
In a statement today (2 August), the NBR said taxpayers filing returns between 1 July and 30 September will receive a rebate equal to 5% of their payable tax, subject to a maximum of Tk25,000, under the new provisions of the Income Tax Act.
No tax incentive will be available for returns submitted between 1 October and 31 December. Taxpayers filing returns between 1 January and 31 March will have to pay a penalty of 2% of the payable tax or a minimum of Tk3,000, whichever is higher.
The penalty will increase to 5% of the payable tax or a minimum of Tk5,000 for returns filed between 1 April and 30 June.
The NBR said the revised structure is aimed at encouraging voluntary tax compliance by rewarding early filers and discouraging delays.
The revenue authority also noted that it launched its e-return service for individual taxpayers for the 2026-27 tax year on 22 July. Through the eTax platform, taxpayers can file returns online and pay taxes via bank transfer, debit and credit cards, or mobile financial services such as bKash, Nagad and Rocket.
The NBR said taxpayers who submit accurate returns online can instantly obtain an acknowledgement receipt and income tax certificate.
It also said officials will assist its call centre and other electronic channels during office hours, except on government holidays, for those encountering difficulties with online filing.
