Tight security at National Memorial ahead of Tarique's visit, public entry suspended
Journalists were allowed to enter the memorial premises until 9am, however, entry for all individuals was stopped from around 9:30am onwards
Law enforcement agencies have enforced strict security measures at the National Memorial in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka, centring on the planned visit of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.
The entire memorial complex has been placed under multiple layers of security since morning, with members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) deployed across the area.
Entry for general visitors has been suspended from early morning. While journalists were allowed to enter the memorial premises until 9am, entry for all individuals was stopped from around 9:30am onwards.
In addition to the inner premises of the memorial, law enforcement personnel have taken positions at the main gate and at several points along the adjacent roads, remaining on high alert.
Meanwhile, BNP leaders and activists from various levels of the party have begun gathering in front of the memorial in anticipation of Tarique Rahman's arrival. At present, they are stationed in front of the main gate of the memorial.
Confirming the measures, Anwar Hossain Khan Anu, in-charge of the National Martyrs' Memorial and sub-assistant engineer of the Savar Public Works Department, said, "Entry for the general public and visitors has remained closed since morning.
Around 3pm, the Chairperson Security Force (CSF) will oversee the security arrangements at the memorial. After BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman leaves, the memorial will be reopened to visitors."
The crowd of party leaders and activists in front of the National Memorial is growing, with BNP leaders and activists from different levels of the party and its affiliated organisations arriving in processions from various areas.
They are waiting eagerly for a glimpse of Tarique Rahman.
Meanwhile, members of law enforcement agencies remain on high alert. They are trying to keep the entrance to the memorial clear by moving party leaders and activists to one side in front of the main gate.
