Teen killed after seeking justice for rape in Narsingdi; 5 held including BNP leader
Locals found her body lying in a mustard field between Bilpar and Darikandi yesterday
A teenage girl was abducted and killed in Narsingdi after her family sought justice over her reported rape. Police have arrested five accused, including a local BNP leader and his son, in connection with the incident.
According to a report by Prothom Alo, the girl's mother filed a case with Madhabdi Police Station last night (26 February), naming nine people as accused in the murder. Police arrested five of the named accused the same night.
Madhabdi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kamal Hossain told Prothom Alo that the victim's mother filed a case last night naming nine accused. "Five of the named accused have already been arrested. Police and other law enforcement agencies are conducting drives to arrest the main accused, Nura. They will be arrested soon," he said.
The arrested individuals are former member of Ward No 9 of Mahishasura Union Parishad and vice-president of the union BNP, Ahmad Ali Dewan, 65, his son Imran Dewan, 32, Md Ebadullah, 35, Ayub Ali, 30, and Md Gaffar, 37.
The girl's body was recovered around 12:30pm yesterday from a mustard field between Bilpar and Darikandi areas under Mahishasura union in Sadar upazila. She lived with her parents and brother in a rented house in the area. Her father and brother work as labourers at a local textile mill. Their ancestral home is in Barishal.
Quoting the case statement, police said the girl had been in contact with a local youth known as Nura, who was allegedly associated with local miscreants. Fifteen days ago, Nura and five to six others allegedly abducted and raped her, according to the family's complaint.
Seeking justice, the family approached former member of Ward 9 of the union parishad Ahmad Ali Dewan. However, they did not receive any remedy. The accused youths reportedly became enraged after the complaint was lodged.
On Wednesday night (25 December), the girl's father was taking her to her aunt's house for safety. When they reached the Bilpar area, Nura and five others allegedly abducted her from her father. Despite searching throughout the night, the family could not locate her.
Yesterday morning, locals found her body lying in a mustard field between Bilpar and Darikandi and informed the police. Officers from Madhabdi Police Station recovered the body.
Family members alleged that Ahmad Ali Dewan, after taking responsibility to resolve the rape allegation, struck a compromise with the accused in exchange for a large sum of money and suppressed the matter without ensuring justice. They further alleged that the family was pressured to leave the village. Failure to secure justice emboldened the accused, ultimately leading to the abduction and killing
