Tarique Rahman's return expected to energise democratic progress: Asif Mahmud
The former adviser noted that despite remaining abroad for a prolonged period, Tarique Rahman stayed emotionally and ideologically connected with his party.
Former interim government adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan today said the return of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to the country is expected to inject fresh momentum into Bangladesh's democratic progress and the establishment of people's rights.
"I hope that Tarique Rahman's return to the homeland will inject new momentum into Bangladesh's democratic advancement and the establishment of people's rights," Asif Mahmud said in a Facebook post this evening.
He described the homecoming not merely as the return of a political leader, but as a moment deeply connected with democracy and the aspirations of the people.
The former adviser noted that despite remaining abroad for a prolonged period, Tarique Rahman stayed emotionally and ideologically connected with his party, the country and its people. He also wished Tarique Rahman success in his future political journey, expressing hope that it would prove welfare-oriented and beneficial for the country and its citizens.
Tarique Rahman returned home today after more than 17 years in exile. A Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight carrying him from London landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at 11:40am, via Sylhet.
He was accorded a warm and emotional reception at the airport on arrival. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir earlier led party standing committee members to greet the acting chairman and receive him at the VVIP lounge of the airport, where Tarique Rahman exchanged greetings with party leaders.
After completing airport formalities, he began his journey to the July 36 Expressway (300-Foot Road) venue by bus amid tight security. Before departing, he touched the soil barefoot, picked up a handful of earth and sniffed it, appearing emotional.
A motorcade then escorted his bus to the venue, as large crowds lined both sides of the airport road leading to the 300-Foot area, welcoming him with slogans.
Later, Tarique Rahman attended a public programme at the July 36 Expressway and addressed the gathering. Walking along the route towards Evercare Hospital, he waved to supporters, acknowledging their presence and support.
