Tarique Rahman acquitted in sedition case in Noakhali

A Noakhali court today (1 October) acquitted BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman in a sedition case filed in 2015.
Noakhali Special District Court Judge Ahsan Tareq passed the order after the final hearing of the case, ABM Zakaria, a lawyer for the accused and a member of the BNP National Executive Committee told The Business Standard.
"Legal action will be taken soon against Ekramul Haque, the joint convener of the district Jubo League, who filed the false case. This case was an attempt to dishonour and humiliate BNP leaders and workers," the lawyer added.

BNP leaders have been calling for the withdrawal of all cases against Tarique Rahman to make way for his return to the country.
According to court sources, on 23 December 2014, Ekramul Haque filed a complaint with the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court, accusing Tarique Rahman and 11 others of sedition.
The court forwarded the complaint to Begumganj Model Thana on 27 December. After investigation, the police station filed a regular case on 27 February 2015. Tarique Rahman was the sole accused in the case.
Investigating the case, Jasim Uddin, a sub-inspector of Begumganj Model Thana, submitted a charge sheet to the court on September 17, 2017. The charge sheet stated that the accused was initially found guilty of sedition and conspiracy against the state.
