Special OMS programme for rice to begin in February

The government has decided to initiate a special Open Market Sale (OMS) programme in February to ensure affordable access to rice for low-income individuals ahead of Ramadan.
The rice will be sold at a subsidized price of Tk30 per kg, with each individual allowed to purchase up to 5 kgs, according to a media statement issued by the food ministry today (28 January).
Under the programme, rice will be sold at subsidised rates in 424 upazilas across 64 districts, including the three hill districts.

Each of the 401 upazilas in 61 districts will receive 3 metric tonnes of rice daily, while the 23 upazilas in the three hill districts will receive 1 metric tonne per day.
The distribution will take place at a total of 848 centres nationwide, said the statement.
In addition, under the general OMS programme, rice will be sold in the Dhaka metropolitan area, district, sadar, municipality, eight city corporations, and labour-intensive areas in four districts (Dhaka, Narayanganj, Narsingdi, and Gazipur).
A total of 906 centres will operate in these areas, providing 1 metric tonne of rice daily per centre. The secretariat centre will sell 2 metric tonnes of rice daily.
