Silence descends on Borhanuddin, but tension rises in Bhola Sadar

A day after a fierce clash that left at least four killed and hundreds injured, Bhola's Borhanuddin upazila lies quiet today.

In the morning, very few people and vehicles are seen on the streets and most of the shops in the town are kept shut.

Four platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh and one platoon of Coast Guard have been deployed in Borhanuddin.

Police have released the people detained last night after a meeting between local lawmaker Ali Azam Mukul and religious leaders.

"A case has been filed accusing 5,000 unidentified people for their involvement with the incident," said Superintendent of Lalmohan Circle Police.

Officer-in-Charge of Borhanuddin police station Enamul Haque said: "The situation is under control. We are now monitoring the situation."

In Chattogram, the Muslim Oikyo Parishad had cancelled its protest rally over Bhola violence as they did not get permission from the police.

The organisation placed a six-point demand, including death penalty for Biplab Chandra Shuvo for allegedly posting offensive remarks about Prophet Muhammad (SM) on Facebook, handing over the bodies of the deceased to their families without post-mortem as well as compensating them.

Meanwhile, the organisation's activists in Bhola Sadar yesterday declared to hold a press briefing today at the Press Club and a rally at the Bhola Government School ground to announce their next movement over the incident.

However, police did not permit holding of either of the events.

Sources said this created tension in the area.

Activists of the Oikya Parishad were seen gathering at different places of the area.
