'Shameless and undemocratic': Nahid slams appointment of new BB governor
Speaking at a discussion at the Krishibid Institute auditorium in Dhaka today (26 February), he said, “The previous governor who was removed through mob pressure to install a loan-defaulter businessman, undermining the aspirations of the July Uprising.”
NCP Convenor and opposition party Chief Whip Nahid Islam has sharply criticised the recent appointment of the new Bangladesh Bank governor, calling the process "shameless and undemocratic."
Speaking at a discussion at the Krishibid Institute auditorium in Dhaka today (26 February), he said, "The previous governor was removed through mob pressure to install a loan-defaulter businessman, undermining the aspirations of the July Uprising."
"This move favours looters instead of ensuring justice for past plunder," he added.
Nahid also addressed concerns over delayed justice for victims of the July Uprising.
He raised doubts about the fairness of ongoing investigations, especially following the removal of Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam, questioning whether justice for July massacre victims would be ensured.
Nahid Islam warned that if comprehensive reforms are not implemented, parliamentary debate will be ineffective, and demands will inevitably move to the streets, for which his party is preparing.
Criticising political forces exploiting the gains of the July Uprising, he said, "Students fought and ordinary people shed blood for this revolt, yet various political groups are now trying to reap its benefits. Many, like the Awami League, use the constitution as an excuse to obstruct reforms."
