Secretariat clash: 4 sent to jail over vandalism, attempted murder

A Dhaka court has sent four individuals to jail in connection with a case involving vandalism, damage to government property, and attempted murder following a clash between the police and protesters at the Secretariat two days ago.
Following a hearing today (24 July), Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam issued the order.
The four accused are Ashiqur Rahman Tanvir (19), Jefri Abhishek Sikder (21), Abu Sufian (21), and Md Shakil Mia (19).
Earlier on the day, Shahbagh Police Station Sub-Inspector Mohammad Mahmudul Hasan, the investigating officer in the case, presented the accused before the court and sought their detention in jail.
Defence lawyers Salauddin Khan and Tahmina Akter Liza applied for bail on behalf of the accused, while Additional Public Prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Suman opposed the petitions on behalf of the state.
After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail pleas and ordered that the accused be held in jail.
Police arrested the four early tonight from the Shahbagh area in connection with the incident.
The case was filed on 22 July by Golam Mukti Mahmud, a sub-inspector of the Secretariat Security Division, with Shahbagh Police Station.
The complaint includes charges against the four named individuals and also names approximately 1,200 unidentified persons as accused.
On Tuesday (22 July), at least 75 people were injured as clashes broke out between law enforcers and protesters demonstrating at the Secretariat demanding resignation of the education adviser over the late rescheduling of HSC exams and lack of transparency about casualties from the recent Milestone plane crash.
Police charged batons and used tear shells and sound grenades to disperse the protesters.
Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the police outpost at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), said 75 injured people arrived at the hospital in the afternoon.
Of them, two were admitted to the hospital with injuries, while the rest were discharged after primary treatment, he added.
Around 2:15pm that day, a group of students marched to the Secretariat and took position in front of Gate-1, chanting slogans like "Why did my brother die? The administration must answer!"
Security personnel, including army officials, were deployed at the Secretariat gates to maintain law and order.
Students threw bottles and bamboo sticks from outside. A police official was hit in the head with these and was injured, said witnesses.
Around 3:45pm, the students opened one of the gates and entered the Secretariat.
Several vehicles at the secretariat were vandalised, our correspondent reported from the spot.
Some law enforcers were also reportedly injured while maintaining law and order.
