SAD Ctg member secretary suspended amid extortion allegation
The Member Secretary of the Chattogram Metropolitan unit of the Student Against Discrimination (SAD), Nizam Uddin, has been suspended from his post on charges of engaging in activities that violate organisational discipline and principles.
The central committee of the organisation issued a show-cause notice to Nizam on Saturday evening, asking him to explain within three working days why he should not be permanently expelled.
The notice, signed by Organising Secretary Muinul Islam, stated that the central leadership received serious allegations involving misconduct and organisational disloyalty.
The suspension came hours after a woman filed a written complaint to Chattogram Metropolitan Police Commissioner Hasib Aziz, accusing Nizam Uddin of extortion and false implication of her husband in a criminal case.
According to the complaint submitted by Riazul Jannat, a resident of South Bagmoniram area, Nizam allegedly demanded Tk2 crore in extortion from her husband, Naoshed Jamal. She claimed that when her husband refused to comply, Nizam used his influence to file a false case against him, leading to Naoshed's arrest by Kotwali police on Thursday.
The letter further states that Nizam introduced himself as a leader of SAD and had been threatening her husband over the past few weeks. "He abused the name of the student movement for personal gain," the letter alleges.
After the complaint became public, SAD's central leadership took immediate action. The show-cause notice, jointly issued by President Rashidul Islam (also known as Rifat Rashid) and General Secretary Hasan Inam, indicated that Nizam's actions, if proven true, are gross violations of the organisation's code of conduct.
"Nizam Uddin is accused of engaging in conduct that is inconsistent with the values and discipline of SAD. He is required to respond in writing within the stipulated time. Failure to provide a satisfactory explanation will result in further disciplinary actions, including permanent expulsion," the notice reads.
As of Saturday night, no official response has been made by Nizam Uddin regarding either the complaint or his suspension.
