Russia will provide 30,000 tonnes of potash fertiliser to Bangladesh completely free of charge as a sign of friendship and deep sincerity.

This fertiliser will be provided under the United Nations World Food Programme, reads a press release today (21 November).

Russia's second-largest ammonia and nitrogen fertiliser manufacturing company Uralchem Group's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dmitry Konyaev informed the agriculture ministry in a letter.

Russia's acting ambassador to Bangladesh Ekaterina Semenova formally handed over the letter to Agriculture Adviser Li Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Russian Ambassador Alexander Mantytskiy had first mentioned the fertiliser shipment to Bangladesh during a courtesy call with the agricultural adviser on 29 August.

Russia is one of the top suppliers of wheat and fertiliser to Bangladesh.

Since 2013, PJSC Uralkali, Russia's top potash fertiliser producer, has supplied more than 1 million tonnes of MOP fertiliser to Bangladesh through JSC Foreign Economic Cooperation Prodintrog on a G2G basis.
