Repeal of referendum ordinance could jeopardise legality of elected parliament: Shishir Manir
He voiced strong opposition to the proposed repeal of around 20 ordinances.
Advocate Shishir Manir, a member of the central working committee of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, warned that repealing the referendum ordinance could put the legality of an elected parliament at risk.
Speaking to journalists at the Supreme Court of Bangladesh today (30 March), he said there is no automatic provision to annul a referendum once held.
Manir also voiced strong opposition to the proposed repeal of around 20 ordinances, including those related to the Commission of Inquiry on enforced disappearances, the Anti-Corruption Commission Reform Commission, and the appointment of Supreme Court judges.
He said if a referendum conducted under a schedule declared by the Election Commission is cancelled, it would logically lead to the invalidation of the general election results as well.
He further alleged that although all political parties had previously reached consensus on 30 points under the National Unity Committee formed by the interim government, the BNP is now delaying and showing reluctance to uphold those agreed positions.
