Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhtar has urged poultry businesses to focus on reducing production costs to make eggs and chicken more affordable for consumers.

"We do not want to import eggs under any circumstances. Importing eggs could introduce diseases from other countries, which could potentially destroy our poultry industry," the adviser said at a seminar today (28 September).

The seminar titled "Cost-effective and Sustainable Poultry Production" was organised by the Bangladesh chapter of the World's Poultry Science Association (WPSA-BB) at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Dhaka.

Farida also acknowledged the challenges faced by the poultry industry due to recent floods, which have led to reduced production.

However, she urged businesses to find ways to make eggs and chicken more affordable for consumers.

The adviser further said, "While the ready-made garment industry and remittances from expatriates play significant roles in Bangladesh's economy, the contribution of the poultry sector is equally important."

Calling for joint efforts from all stakeholders to develop and expand the poultry industry, she emphasised that this sector fulfils a large portion of our daily protein requirements.

"While contributing significantly to the country's economic development, the poultry industry also plays a crucial role in social development and job creation,"  she added.
