Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman has said there is no alternative to a skilled, modern and patriotic army to safeguard the country's independence and sovereignty.

He made the remarks while addressing the President's Parade of the 90th Long Course at the Bangladesh Military Academy (BMA) in Bhatiary, Chattogram, today (18 June), as chief guest.
He reviewed the parade, received the salute, and distributed awards among cadets.
He said, "The BMA, established in 1974, continues to strengthen the Army by producing capable officers who are contributing both nationally and internationally."
He also said the "2nd Bangladesh Battalion" has been established at BMA to improve training standards and develop a modern training system, expressing hope it will help produce competent leaders for future challenges.
Addressing newly commissioned officers, he urged them to uphold honesty, integrity, discipline, and dedication, remain prepared for any situation, and prioritise national interests above all.
He said, "Discipline is the foundation of professionalism in the Army", and instructed officers to treat subordinates with responsibility and care while ensuring proper training.
Concluding, he reiterated the Army motto and said protecting sovereignty remains the foremost duty of every officer.
A total of 184 cadets were commissioned after completing three years of training, including 166 men and 18 women.
Cadets from Palestine, Tanzania, Zambia, and the Maldives also completed training and will join their respective forces.
Khairul Islam received the "Sword of Honour" and "Chief of Army Staff Gold Medal," while Tanzania's Abu Bakar was named "Best Foreign Cadet".
The Army chief is also expected to inaugurate the newly established 2nd Bangladesh Battalion and several new facilities at BMA.
