Questionable, controversial outfit of student at Cuet admission test goes viral

A photo of an admission test in Bangladesh has gone viral on social media. 

The photo, normal on the surface, however, captures one man in particular, brows furrowed in concentration. 

He, however, is sporting a T-shirt with the Nazi Swastika. 

The photo, taken by Sara Bangla, was posted on Reddit prompting a lot of reactions. 

It was taken during the Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology's (Cuet) admission test on Saturday.

In a post titled "An examinee in the right column wore a Nazi outfit during an engineering admission test," commentators spoke about the candidates and the invigilators as well. 

"He looks appropriately puzzled," user FiveFingerDisco commented. 

"Perhaps wondering why he feels drawn to wear the garb of a movement that believes dark skinned people like himself are subhuman animals that must be cleansed from the earth," another commenter wrote. 

"My guess is that he's not a Nazi in the sense that people in the west think of what a Nazi is. To him, that happened far away and it's far more abstract than for people in the west. Add to that, WWII led to the independence of India/Pakistan, which is something that could be very important to him and which he may see as a very positive outcome. My guess: nationalist, not not really a Nazi as we think of it," user gw2master wrote.

Swastika-adorned trinkets have a huge market in Southeast Asia. 

From Thailand to Indonesia to Bangladesh, such items can be found throughout the region. 

In Bangladesh, there are Facebook stores that engage in selling Nazi symbols.

Derived from Sanskrit and with roots in India, the swastika is a commonly displayed motif in Hindu temples across Asia.

But this isn't to say that the reality of the Nazi symbol is lost on most South Asians, who seem to enjoy a complicated relationship with Adolf Hitler.
