Protest over schoolgirl’s rape paralyses Khagrachhari: Section 144 enforced -- what we know so far
All vehicular movement in and out of Khagrachhari has been suspended, leaving about 2,000 tourists stranded in Sajek, Rangamati. Authorities said no fresh clashes were reported today.
An indefinite road blockade has brought transport to a standstill in Khagrachhari since this morning (28 September) as protests continue over the alleged gang rape of an eighth-grade schoolgirl.
Section 144, imposed yesterday (27 September) following violent clashes, remains in force.
What we know
- Police also detained three youths on suspicion of sabotage at a Buddhist monastery.
- All vehicular movement in and out of Khagrachhari has been suspended, leaving about 2,000 tourists stranded in Sajek, Rangamati. Authorities said no fresh clashes were reported today.
- In connection with the case, police arrested a 19-year-old youth, Shayan Sheel, with the help of the army. He has been placed on a five-day remand. Efforts are underway to apprehend the other suspects.
- Yesteray, protesters clashed with police in Swanirbhar and Narikel Bagan areas. Law enforcers used tear gas and blank shots to disperse the crowds. At least 25 people were injured, including one critically, and several shops came under attack.
The protest began on 24 September when Jumma Chhatra-Janata demanded justice for the alleged gang rape in Singinala area of Khagrachhari Sadar Upazila. Demonstrations have since escalated into road blockades and clashes, forcing the authorities to impose Section 144 on 27 September.
