Those who fail to adapt to changed politics will become irrelevant: Nahid

Those who fail to adapt to the new political dynamics that developed in the country after the July uprising will eventually become irrelevant, National Citizen Party Convener Nahid Islam has said.

"Our new endeavor focuses on altering the traditional [political] structure and establishing a fresh political framework," he told the media, prior to a view-exchange meeting with party leaders and activists and local dignitaries at the Barishal Club auditorium today.

"We need to move forward through [ensuring] changes, reforms, and justice. Our aim is to move away from the conventional political system. It is our earnest desire to promote a new political culture," he added.

Nahid said work on forming various wings and associate organisations of the National Citizen Party is currently underway, and those who have been working under the banner of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the National Citizens Committee have to be well-organised, to prepare themselves to discharge their roles in the NCP's bodies.

He said the party will move towards elections once justice is ensured and fundamental reforms are done within the state.

"Fundamental and qualitative reforms must be conducted, and the foundation for these reforms must be laid during this government's tenure," he stressed.

Nahid highlighted that since the beginning, the National Citizen Party has been advocating for a constituent assembly election, without which, he said fundamental reforms to the constitution cannot be achieved.

He urged caution against what he termed "character assassination efforts" against the student coordinators and those who are supportive of the new political landscape.

Nahid said the National Citizen Party is committed against any potential concession with any political party, and to uphold the spirit of the July movement.

He acknowledged the contribution of the people and students of Barishal during the July movement.

He reflected with deep respect on those who were martyred during the mass uprising in Barishal, and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured.
