Tarique's return signals democracy's comeback: Mirza Abbas
Demanded government action against mob assailants
The nation's lost democracy is returning with the homecoming of BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas said today (20 December).
"The democracy that Ziaur Rahman established in Bangladesh, the democracy that Khaleda Zia nurtured, Tarique Rahman is bringing that very democracy back," he made the remarks while addressing a preparatory meeting for welcoming Tarique Rahman at the capital's Gopibagh area.
Protesting the vandalism at Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, the BNP leader said undemocratic forces cannot survive in the face of democracy. "Those who are conspiring, beware. Those who burned down organisations such as Prothom Alo and Daily Star, who are they? They are enemies of the country. They must be stopped," he added.
Mirza also criticised the government, stating, "We have told the government multiple times that we want to help you. However, they have instead been associating with the country's enemies. Where is the law enforcement when arson and terrorism are raging, and mobs are on the move? Instead, there is a futile attempt to blame BNP."
He demanded that the government take action against these mob assailants.
"BNP is the guardian of democracy, not its destroyer. We do not practice the politics of killing, mob violence or enforced disappearances. That doesn't mean we will sit idle with folded hands," Abbas said.
