Tarique Rahman's return expected to strengthen democracy: Mahfuj Alam
“Let’s hope he [Tarique] delivers on his promises and helps build a truly sovereign and democratic polity. Welcome home,” he says
Tarique Rahman's return to Bangladesh after more than 17 years in exile is expected to strengthen trust and confidence in the country's democratic process, Mahfuj Alam, former Information and Broadcasting adviser, said today (25 December).
In a Facebook post, Mahfuj, also a key figure in the July Uprising, wrote, "The Zia family's commitment to the cause of sovereignty and democracy has been demonstrated over decades."
"Let's hope he [Tarique] delivers on his promises and helps build a truly sovereign and democratic polity. Welcome home," he added.
Tarique Rahman, the eldest son of former president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia, returned to Bangladesh today after spending more than 17 years abroad.
He had left the country in 2008 amid political turmoil and multiple cases filed against him.
Supporters and senior leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) welcomed Tarique Rahman upon his arrival, describing his return as a significant moment for the party and national politics.
Tarique Rahman has served as the BNP's acting chairman since 2018 while in exile.
