SAD, NCP announce nationwide blockade, protest programmes over attack in Gopalganj

Students Against Discrimination (SAD) and the NCP have announced separate programmes in protest against an attack on the NCP's central leaders during a rally this morning in Gopalganj allegedly by local leaders and activists of the Awami League and Chhatra League.

Hasan Imam, general secretary of SAD, has announced a blockade programme to be observed at all major places in the country today.

He urged all units of SAD, along with local student organisations, political parties, and general students to join in the blockade.

Besides, the Dhaka North and South units NCP have called a torch procession to be held at its central party office in the capital's Banglamotor area at 8 tonight. Meanwhile, Jatiya Jubo Shakti, the youth wing of the NCP, has announced a programme called "Bangla Blockade" in protest against the attack on its party leaders.

In a media release issued today, the youth front demanded exemplary punishment for the attackers by arresting them immediately.

The NCP convoy was attacked following a rally of the party at Gopalganj's municipal park area around 1:30pm, according to Gopalganj sadar police station OC Mir Md Sajedur Rahman.

Eyewitnesses and party sources said the attackers also vandalised the stage, sound system, microphones, and chairs at the venue.

Later, section 144 has been enforced in the district to calm the situation, as the Awami League activists also engaged in clashes with police and the Army. In addition, four platoons of BGB have been deployed in the area to tame the situation.
