Bring Hasina back within a month to execute verdict: Nahid Islam
Bangladesh will find peace only when former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's death sentence is executed, he says
National Citizen Party (NCP) Convenor Nahid Islam has called for the immediate execution of the tribunal's verdict against Sheikh Hasina, insisting that she be brought back to Bangladesh to ensure its swift completion within a month.
"This verdict must be executed by bringing Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh within a month," Nahid said at a press conference at the NCP's temporary office today (17 November).
Nahid, a key coordinator of the July movement that led to Hasina's fall, said, "We will find peace the day we see Sheikh Hasina hanging before our eyes and the verdict executed."
He congratulated students involved in last year's July uprising, martyrs' families, and injured fighters, calling the tribunal's verdict a historic step toward justice.
He further said, "The International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced the murderous, authoritarian, fascist Hasina to death. Today we have achieved part of the justice we fought for since the killing of my brother Abu Saeed on 16 July."
Nahid recalled atrocities committed under Hasina's 16-year rule, including enforced disappearances, killings, human rights violations, the Pilkhana massacre, the Shapla Square killings, and the July genocide.
While welcoming the verdict, Nahid stressed it must be implemented swiftly. "Sheikh Hasina must be brought back from Delhi, and the interim government should take immediate action. The same applies to former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Kamal, also sentenced to death. Justice must also extend to Chhatra League, Jubo League, and implicated officials."
Describing Hasina as "one of the most notorious, bloodthirsty fascists in world history," he said her trial sets a precedent for holding authoritarian leaders accountable globally. Nahid urged that the tribunal's work not be disrupted post-election and affirmed that the NCP will continue mobilising to demand systemic reform of Bangladesh's state structures.
"Although Sheikh Hasina has been convicted individually, she directed these crimes as a party and government leader. Therefore, the Awami League is also implicated in crimes against humanity," he added.
He concluded by thanking the student activists and anti-fascist political parties for their role in securing the verdict and urged swift enforcement of the remaining July–August cases.
