Only those who participated in movements in last 16 years will lead BNP: Ctg mayor
The party belongs to those who have stood firm through the struggle, he says

The future leadership of BNP will be comprised of those who have actively participated in the party's movements and struggles over the past 16 years, Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Shahadat Hossain said today (14 June).
Speaking at a post-Eid reunion at the Samarnika Community Center in Love Lane, Chattogram, Shahadat said, "Only those who have made real sacrifices — facing cases, jail time, and political persecution — will be given leadership roles in the BNP. Opportunists or those affiliated with the Awami League will have no place in the party."
Shahadat, former president of Chattogram Metropolitan BNP, warned party members to remain cautious of individuals spreading confusion and reiterated that leadership cannot be claimed without merit.
"No one can parachute in and expect a position. The party belongs to those who have stood firm through the struggle."
The Chattogram mayor also highlighted the recent meeting between BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, calling it a turning point for the party.
"This meeting has delivered an important political message. A participatory national election is expected in February 2026, and the path is now clearer for a democratic government led by the BNP," he said.
He called on leaders and activists to unite, setting aside internal differences.
"There is no alternative to national unity if we want to restore the people's rights and uphold the country's sovereignty," he added.
Prominent BNP leaders including Vice Chairman Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin, Gias Uddin Quader Chowdhury, Sukomal Barua, Rafiqul Islam, AM Nazim Uddin, Ershad Ullah, Abul Hashem Bakkar, Shamsul Alam, Hommam Quader Chowdhury, Abu Sufian, Zahidul Karim Kochi, Khurshid Jamil Chowdhury, and Badrul Anwar also addressed the gathering.
