Justice, rehabilitation to be entrusted to families of July Uprising martyrs: Nazrul Islam
BNP says families of July Uprising martyrs should lead justice and rehabilitation efforts with government backing.
BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan has said that the responsibility of ensuring justice and rehabilitation for those affected by the July Uprising would be entrusted to the families of the martyrs themselves.
Nazrul said, "Those who were martyred in this movement, and whose families are now demanding justice – why should we not entrust responsibility to such deserving people?"
"Tarique Rahman believes that members of martyr families should be entrusted with overseeing the judicial process, ensuring treatment for the injured, providing education for the children, and managing rehabilitation. The government will extend full cooperation," he made the remarks while speaking as chair at an exchange-of-views meeting held at the Krishibid Institute in the capital today (18 January).
Addressing the families of those injured and killed in the July Uprising, Nazrul said, "Because the aspirations of the Liberation War were not realised, you fought, sacrificed lives, and were injured, thereby preparing the ground for another phase of struggle. In that sense, you are also a kind of freedom fighter of this era."
"There is a Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, which would be able to take necessary steps to resolve the various problems faced by the affected families," he said.
"The ministry would also be responsible for addressing the problems of those who were killed and martyred in the 2024 Mass Uprising," he added.
Nazrul further said that the families would have the authority to demand government action if any court refuses to accept their cases.
In conclusion, calling on the families of the martyrs and the injured, he said, "You have waited a long time. Those who were responsible failed to perform their duties. Now place your trust in us. Under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, we will fulfil our responsibility to ensure your justice, dignity, and rehabilitation."
