Joining Mecca Pact is Bangladesh's own decision: Jamaat ameer
The pact, signed in Mecca on 7 August, commits the three signatories to treat an armed attack on one as an attack on all.
Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and opposition leader Shafiqur Rahman has said any decision by Bangladesh to join the Mecca Pact is entirely a matter for the country itself, and there is no reason for others to be uncomfortable with a move taken in the national interest.
He made the remarks in a post on his verified Facebook page at around 11:45am today (27 August).
"Joining the Mecca Pact is entirely Bangladesh's own matter. If Bangladesh takes a decision based on the needs and interests of the country and its people, there is no reason for anyone else to be distressed by it," he said.

Discussions have recently emerged over the possibility of Bangladesh joining the Mecca Joint Defence Pact signed by Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan, with opinions divided over the issue.
The joint defence pact was signed by Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan in Mecca on 7 August.
Under the agreement, an armed attack against any one of the three countries will be considered an attack against all three.
