Jamaat urges EC vigilance over code of conduct violation centring Tarique Rahman's reception
The relevant returning officer would examine whether any violation of the code of conduct is being taken place, says the EC secretary
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has expressed concern over possible violations of the election code of conduct in connection with the reception being organised to mark the homecoming of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, urging the Election Commission (EC) to remain vigilant and take appropriate action.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with the chief election commissioner (CEC) today (24 December), Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair said the party had removed all its posters and banners across the country within 48 hours of the election schedule announcement.
However, he alleged that violations of the code of conduct were continuing elsewhere.
"Along with physical banners, the code of conduct is also being violated on virtual and digital platforms," he said, adding that Jamaat had asked the EC to ensure their immediate removal and maintain a "level playing field" for all political parties.
He also said, "We have also raised the issue of security for our leaders who are actively involved in the election process, particularly senior leaders who will be travelling extensively across the country. We pointed out that while some receive VVIP-level facilities, others do not, which creates an uneven playing field. We have drawn the commission's attention to this discrimination," he said.
In addition, he alleged that a major political party was promising to distribute cards worth crores of taka and provide cash, which Jamaat considers a clear violation of the election code of conduct.
The party has requested the Election Commission to take immediate action in this regard, he said.
The Jamaat leader said he also raised several other demands, including the installation of CCTV cameras at polling stations, the arrest of criminals, and ensuring opportunities for voter registration under the postal voting system.
Following the meeting, Election Commission Secretariat Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed briefed journalists, saying the relevant returning officer would examine whether any violation of the code of conduct had taken place.
