Jamaat has not ‘swallowed’ any ally: Shafiqur says at Ctg rally
The Jamaat-e-Islami has not "swallowed" or subsumed any of its political allies, party Ameer Shafiqur Rahman said yesterday (2 February), rejecting allegations surrounding the party's alliance politics.
Speaking as the chief guest at an election rally of an 11-party alliance at the Bandar School and College ground in Chattogram city, Shafiqur said each party in the alliance retained its own political identity and path.
"We have 11 parties in our alliance, and each has its own path. We have not swallowed any party. Such claims amount to insulting a political party, and we have not done that. Every party is contesting in its own way," he said.
He also criticised political parties' promise of issuing family cards. "We want to build Bangladesh as a dignified nation, not one that depends on handouts."
He said Jamaat aimed to ensure security for all citizens, especially women, in their homes, workplaces and public spaces.
"We want security for everyone, particularly for mothers and sisters — at home, on the streets and at work. We will uphold their dignity with all our strength. If we fail to protect that dignity, we are prepared to give our lives," he said.
Referring to the July Uprising, Shafiqur said the youth who took to the streets demanded justice, not charity.
He added that Jamaat envisioned young people as future leaders.
He also pledged unity across religion and ethnicity, saying the country should not be divided by old grievances.
On the upcoming referendum and election, Shafiqur urged voters to cast a "Yes" vote on 12 February, saying it was essential to uphold the spirit of the uprising.
Addressing the Chattogram port, he alleged that certain groups had profited for decades by exploiting the port.
"Many have made their fortunes by selling off this port. That opportunity will not be allowed again. The port will belong to the people," he said.
