Hasina's statements caused outburst of anger in Dhanmondi, rest of country: Jatiya Nagorik Committee

Bangladesh's ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina's provocative and hateful remarks created public outrage that resulted in the show of anger in the capital's Dhanmondi and across the country, the Jatiya Nagorik Committee said in a statement issued last night (6 February).

They demanded a strong diplomatic protest against Sheikh Hasina's hateful and destabilising activities.

"The government must take swift and effective action on this issue so that no one can undermine Bangladesh's internal stability while staying on foreign soil," reads the statement sent by the platform's Spokesperson Samanta Sharmin.

In its statement, the Jatiya Nagorik Committee also called upon the Indian government to "stop all activities of the accused and wanted killer Hasina and her associates, charged with crimes against humanity, and extradite them to Bangladesh quickly."

"We urge the students and the public to remain calm and vigilant. Killer Hasina and her accomplices are conspiring to destabilise the country. Everyone must remain united against these conspiracies," reads the statement.

The platform also demanded that those involved in the July killings be arrested and the trial process completed quickly.

The statement comes following the vandalism and arson attacks on structures and installations linked to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Sheikh Hasina and the Awami League.

Since the demolition of Mujib's Dhanmondi 32 residence started Wednesday evening (5 February), agitated people have been storming establishments linked to the party or its legacy, chanting slogans mostly against Hasina, saying they wanted to eliminate all traces of fascism in the country.

The demolition of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's residence followed a social media call for a "Bulldozer Procession Towards Dhanmondi 32", triggered by ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina's scheduled 9pm virtual address to her party's banned student wing, Chhatra League on Wednesday.

According to the agitators in Dhanmondi, the house, long associated with Mujib and his family, symbolises "authoritarianism and fascism."
