Five leaders of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), including Sylhet City Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, have decided to resign from the party posts centring the dispute over Sylhet district and city Juba Dal convener committee formation.

Members of the party's central executive committee Ariful and Shahriar Hossain Chowdhury, Micro-Credit Affairs Secretary Abdur Razzak, Volunteer Affairs Assistant Secretary Shamsuzzaman Zaman and former general secretary of the district BNP Ali Ahmad took the decision at a meeting on Saturday night.

Leaders and activists of the party held the meeting in Kumarpara area after the central committee announced the new convener committee of Sylhet district and city Juba Dal on Friday.

Several sources said the central leaders took the decision to resign when the deprived leaders and activists of the district BNP and Jubo Dal wanted to resign from the party.

Ariful said organisational process was not followed in the formation of the committee. The committee was formed as per the will of a particular person, he added.

"We will inform Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir regarding the issue in written and seek solution. If the central committee does not take any action, we will submit resignations," said Ariful.

Abdur Razzak said they would submit the resignation letters to Mirza Fakhrul today (Sunday).
