Ex-CJ Khairul responsible for political crises, deserves exemplary punishment: Fakhrul
Fakhrul labels the former CJ a ‘big foe’ of Bangladesh
Former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque is completely accountable for generating political crises within the country, making him worthy of a significant punishment, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said today.
"Justice Khairul Haque deserves an exemplary punishment so that no one can harm the state from that position [as chief justice] in the future. After the ruling he issued, the annulment of the caretaker government provision was rendered permanent, which had triggered a political crisis in Bangladesh in the latter period. Consequently, the nation has endured damage," Fakhrul told the media at the BNP chairperson's Gulshan political office.
Fakhrul's remarks come hours after ABM Khairul was detained by the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) from his Dhanmondi residence this morning.
On 10 May 2011, the Appellate Division panel headed by former Chief Justice ABM Khairul issued a ruling, nullifying the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, thereby making the caretaker government system illegal.
Commenting on Khairul's arrest, Fakhrul labelled him a "big foe" of Bangladesh. "He has carried out huge damage to Bangladesh. He was in charge of a big position that was determining the fate of Bangladesh. He resorted to deception while assuming the role. He conned the people, deceived the state."
"His ruling on the caretaker government system went against the state," added the BNP leader.
Fakhrul also thanked the interim government as the former chief justice was arrested, and expressed optimism that all issues against ABM Khirul will undergo a fair investigation and trial.
Commenting on reports that the Shishu Academy building would be demolished, Fakhrul said the BNP strongly opposes the move.
However, following his arrest, ABM Khairul was taken to the DB office on Minto Road.
Deputy Commissioner (Media) of DMP Talebur Rahman told TBS that Khairul is accused in three separate cases filed. Authorities plan to formally arrest him in connection with any one of these cases.
