BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas has alleged that a "drama" is unfolding in the name of banning the Awami League.

Speaking at a memorial event marking the 10th death anniversary of BNP leader Nasiruddin Pintu at the National Press Club today (12 May), Abbas said, "Those who claim the BNP will rehabilitate the very people who oppressed them for 17 years are driven by envy towards the party."

He further claimed that there is a conspiracy underway to exclude BNP sympathisers from the administration, adding, "It seems the country is now being run by several advisers who are not even citizens of this country. We are witnessing a form of colonial rule."

Abbas also questioned the circumstances under which former president Abdul Hamid left the country, reportedly receiving VIP treatment. "The government claims it knows nothing. Do they really not know? That's the question."

Accusing the government of using the so-called "humanitarian corridor" to serve hidden agendas, he said the overall state of the country is dire. He also expressed surprise over the silence of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Andolon regarding the issue.

The BNP leader alleged that the administration is being purged of BNP loyalists and is instead being filled with individuals aligned with the Awami League and Jamaat-e-Islami.
