Democracy at risk when political parties overpower people: BNP’s Moyeen Khan
Criticising the proportional representation (PR) system, the BNP leader argued that it may not align with Bangladesh’s social context

When a political party becomes more powerful than the people it serves, democracy is put in serious jeopardy, BNP Standing Committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan said today (30 July).
Speaking at a seminar, Moyeen Khan addressed a range of issues related to the country's political system and upcoming elections.
The seminar titled "Democratic Transition, Interim Government Term and Proportional Election: Bangladesh and Global Perspective" was held at a hotel in the capital.
Referring to reports that the national election date may be announced on 5 August, he said, "Regardless of when the election takes place, simply announcing the date will help stabilise the deteriorating law and order situation."
Criticising the proportional representation (PR) system, he argued it may not align with Bangladesh's social context.
"In the PR system, people vote for parties, not individuals. Our social structure is different from other countries, so we must carefully consider whether such a system is truly applicable here."
