Women leaders from different sectors in Chattogram advocated for more participation of women in the national election of the country.

At a roundtable organised to observe International Women's Day on 9 March, they opined that more women should be nominated for the general seats in the national election.

Democracy International, Chattogram organised the event funded by USAID at the Copper Chimney Restaurant in the port city.

At this event, women leaders presented numerous recommendations to enhance the country's political system and promote women's political empowerment.

Speakers highlighted that despite having female leadership at the top of two major parties, our political structure still falls short in promoting women's empowerment.

Additionally, a patriarchal mindset poses a significant barrier to women's entry into politics. To fulfil their promises, political parties must prioritise building women's leadership from the grassroots level, they said.

Furthermore, they emphasised that simply filling quotas is not the only solution. The development of a political culture that promotes equal participation of both men and women is crucial. By fostering a democratic environment within political parties, women's leadership can be nurtured from the grassroots level.

Awami Women's League Chattogram North District President Dilwara Yusuf, General Secretary Advocate Basanti Prabha Palit, Jatiya Mahila Party Chattogram Metropolitan President Sultana Rahman, Jubo Mohila League Chattogram Metropolitan Convener Saira Banu Roushni were present at the event among many others.

The programme was moderated by Democracy International, Chattogram Regional Manager Md Sadrul Amin and Regional Coordinator Mohammad Obaidur Rahman.
