Civil society to hold memorial for Khaleda Zia tomorrow
A memorial in honour of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia will be held tomorrow (16 January) at 2:30pm at the South Plaza of the National Parliament Building. Organised by civil society, the event is intended as a dignified national tribute rather than a political programme.
Speaking at a press conference today (15 January) at the Krishibid Institute in Dhaka, economist and political analyst Prof Mahbub Ullah, joined by Prof Mamun Ahmed, vice-chancellor (Education) of Dhaka University, and other organisers, explained that since Khaleda Zia's passing on 30 December last year, countless people have expressed grief and respect for her, adding that the memorial is a sacred occasion and maintaining decorum is essential.
He further added, "No political leader will speak at the podium. Only distinguished professionals – including researchers, religious representatives, members of hill communities, doctors, teachers, and others – will deliver remarks. Political figures are invited solely as guests and will remain in the audience."
Strict protocols have been put in place to maintain the memorial's solemnity. Attendees cannot take selfies, applaud, or stand during the proceedings. Entry is limited to invitation holders, though pre-registered guests who forget their invitations will be allowed with alternate passes. The organisers emphasised that it will be a silent, respectful gathering reflecting the nation's tribute.
Participants include professionals from across Bangladesh – engineers, doctors, editors, journalists, university faculty, intellectuals, and religious representatives – alongside invited guests from foreign diplomatic missions.
Prof Ullah also noted, "Philosophically, every human action has some link to politics. In that sense, this event is both political and non-political; however, no political party member will address the gathering."
Responding to questions about whether BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman would speak, organisers confirmed, "Only invited professionals will deliver remarks. No political party member will speak. Family members of Khaleda Zia have been invited and will be present."
Prof Ullah expressed hope that the memorial will be remembered in Bangladesh's history as a dignified occasion. "We expect the nation's respect for Khaleda Zia to be reflected in an orderly and honourable manner," he said.
