BNP welcomes Hasina verdict, calls for fair trials in all pending cases
Acting chairman Tarique Rahman presided over the meeting virtually from London
The BNP has welcomed the International Crimes Tribunal's verdict against Sheikh Hasina and her associates, while calling for fair and impartial trials for all individuals facing charges in other cases.
Following the BNP Standing Committee meeting on Monday night (17 November), the party's Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir conveyed the committee's formal reaction at a press conference held at the BNP chairperson's political office in Gulshan.
Acting chairman Tarique Rahman presided over the meeting virtually from London.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the BNP said the tribunal delivered its judgment "in line with international standards," and that the verdict against Sheikh Hasina and two others "upheld justice."
According to the party, the tribunal's decision to award the maximum punishment to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal reflects the lawful consequence of the crimes for which they were convicted.
The statement said the party remains "firmly committed to the rule of law and the establishment of justice," and called on state authorities to guarantee full legal rights and due process for every accused person, regardless of political affiliation.
The BNP stated that it believes the tribunal's verdict will provide some solace to the families of those who faced disappearances, killings, and extrajudicial actions over the past 16 years, as well as to the families of the victims of the 2024 student–people Mass Uprising.
