BNP is committed to reforms as the party announced a 31-point outline for state reforms two years back when no one spoke about these reforms, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said today (16 March).

"There is no major difference between those reforms and the proposals being made today," he told a pre-iftar event of BFUJ and DUJ at Jatiya Press Club.

Fakhrul also reiterated the party's demand for holding quick polls to hand over state power to an elected government.

"We have gained a new independence by defeating the fascist Hasina government. Now we need to consolidate our unity further," he said.

The BNP secretary general said deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina's government destroyed every institution of the state and democracy as no institution is left intact.

It is not an easy task to rebuild the country from this pile of destruction, he added.

"I think that the responsibility of building a new country does not lie solely with the government, but all political parties must work together to lift the country," he said.

Fakhrul expressed his fear saying now the newspaper stories of rapes and murders are tormenting people now.

On the other hand, young generation, especially students, are becoming intolerant, he said, adding Dhaka streets witness protests and demonstrations for various demands every day.

He urged all to remain patient in this regard.

Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar, BNP Chairperson's Adviser Poet Abdul Hai Sikder, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) acting President Obaidur Rahman Shahin, Secretary General Kader Gani Chowdhury, DUJ President Shahidul Islam and General Secretary Khurshid Alam also spoke.

AB Party President Mujibur Rahman Manju, former JPC President Kamal Uddin Sabuj and former JPC general secretary Elias Khan were present.
