BNP standing committee to discuss presidential nominee today

The BNP's highest policymaking body, the National Standing Committee, is set to meet today amid growing political discussions over the election of the country's next president, with party leaders expected to deliberate on and possibly finalise their preferred candidate.

According to party insiders, the meeting will primarily focus on selecting the party's presidential nominee. If a consensus is reached, BNP may formally announce its candidate or begin the necessary political process. 

The committee is also expected to discuss the country's political situation, key state appointments and organisational matters.

The presidential election became necessary after president Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned on 24 July, citing health reasons. 

Following the acceptance of his resignation, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad assumed the role of acting president in accordance with the constitution.

With the election of the country's 23rd president due within 90 days of the vacancy, party insiders say BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will make the final decision after hearing the views of senior leaders at today's meeting.

Sources said the party is giving importance to loyalty, competence, sound judgment, broad acceptability and the ability to take firm positions during national crises while choosing its nominee.

Four senior leaders under consideration

According to BNP sources, four senior leaders are at the centre of discussions: Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Nazrul Islam Khan and Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan. Party insiders said the eventual nominee is likely to come from this shortlist.

However, the party is also weighing the organisational impact of the appointment. Both Mirza Fakhrul and Nazrul Islam Khan remain key figures in BNP's policymaking, and becoming president would require them to step away from active party politics.

Besides the four senior BNP leaders, acting President Hafiz Uddin and former chief adviser of the interim government Muhammad Yunus have also been mentioned in political discussions though there has been no official indication regarding their possible candidacies.

Sources said that if Hafiz Uddin is elected president, the position of speaker would become vacant, with Moyeen Khan emerging as a possible candidate for the post.

Election by 22 October

The constitution requires the election of a new president within 90 days of the resignation, meaning the vote must be held by 22 October. The Election Commission has already started preparations. On 28 July, Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin met acting Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal to discuss the election process.

Under the constitution, the president is elected by members of parliament through an open ballot. After receiving the list of MPs from the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat, the Election Commission will announce the election schedule, including deadlines for nominations, scrutiny, withdrawal of candidacy and polling.

A presidential candidate must be nominated by one MP, seconded by another and provide written consent.

Since the restoration of parliamentary democracy in 1991, only one presidential election has been contested through voting in parliament. In every subsequent election, the ruling party's nominee has been elected unopposed. If more than one candidate contests this time, MPs will cast their votes in parliament, and the candidate securing the highest number of votes will be elected Bangladesh's 23rd president.
