BNP betrayed the public mandate after polls, alleges NCP's Akhter
Akhter called on the government and the public to remain vigilant against the return of any "fascist structures" in the country
National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary and lawmaker Akhter Hossen has alleged that the BNP government betrayed the public mandate immediately after the elections by ignoring the people's expectations regarding the governance of the state.
Speaking at a coordination meeting of the 10th council of Jatiya Jubo Shakti, NCP's youth wing, today (25 April), the Rangpur-4 member of parliament said the government is now making arbitrary decisions in defiance of the public's will.
Akhter remarked that it was "extremely unfortunate" that the BNP government began "deceiving the public on the very first day of its term".
He argued that the recent elections were inextricably linked to the referendum, where voters not only chose their representatives but also expressed their stance on how the country should be governed through a "Yes" vote.
The NCP leader claimed that the BNP's argument of being able to act at will due to a majority is a betrayal of the referendum.
He noted that while the public brought the BNP to power, 70% of voters in the referendum expected the government to run the country based on public opinion.
Akhter said the government's current trajectory suggests it failed to grasp the significance of that mandate.
Turning to economic issues, he alleged that thousands of crores of taka were printed immediately after the government was formed.
He further claimed that new laws were enacted to "rehabilitate money launderers", a move he warned is placing the national economy at significant risk.
Akhter called on the government and the public to remain vigilant against the return of any "fascist structures" in the country.
He also demanded that the authorities take effective legal action against organisations that have already been banned by law.
