BGB deployed at EC headquarters amid Chhatra Dal sit-in
BGB personnel were deployed in front of the Nirbachan Bhaban to maintain law and order.
The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been deployed in front of the Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon, Dhaka, amid a sit-in programme by Chhatra Dal, the BNP's student wing.
BGB Public Relations Officer Md Shariful Islam confirmed the development in a statement sent to the media today (18 January).
He said BGB personnel were deployed in front of the Nirbachan Bhaban to maintain law and order.
Earlier in the morning, Chhatra Dal began its sit-in programme in front of Nirbachan Bhaban. The organisation alleged that the Election Commission was taking biased decisions, including political interference in various rulings related to postal ballots.
At around 12pm, Chhatra Dal General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir said in front of Nirbachan Bhaban, "We will continue our peaceful sit-in here until tonight."
Chhatra Dal stated that the Election Commission's "biased and questionable" decisions regarding postal ballots have raised serious doubts about the neutrality of the electoral process.
Without naming anyone or any political party, it alleged that under pressure from a particular political group, the commission has taken "impulsive and short-sighted" decisions instead of responsible and rational ones, raising questions about its independence and professionalism.
It warned that the move is an ominous sign for democratic practice at universities.
