Political stability in Bangladesh essential for progress on Teesta deal: Indian minister

Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil emphasised yesterday (26 June) that political stability in Bangladesh is essential for moving forward with the long-pending Teesta water-sharing agreement.
His remarks come amid renewed concerns over the impasse surrounding the deal, which has remained unresolved between the two countries for over a decade, reports The Press Trust of India.
Although a general framework for the agreement was reached during former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Bangladesh, its finalisation was blocked due to opposition from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
