Police identify three killed in Khagrachhari violence
All three victims were residents of Hafchhari union in Guimara upazila and aged between 20 and 22.
Police today (29 September) released the identities of three people killed during yesteday's violence in Khagrachhari's Guimara that erupted amid protests over the gang-rape of a Marma schoolgirl.
All three victims were residents of Hafchhari union in Guimara upazila and aged between 20 and 22, reports BBC Bangla.
The deceased are: Teiching Marma (20), son of Olakai Marma of Ramsu Bazar area; Athuipru Marma (21), son of Thuhla Aong Marma of Amtali Para; and Aukhrau Marma (22), son of Hasu Marma of Chenguli Para.
Police said postmortems of the deceased are underway, after which the bodies will be handed over to their families.
Earlier today, local hill and Bengali community leaders met with district administration and police officials to review the situation. Police said all parties agreed to work together to restore calm.
Meanwhile, Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury stated that the overall situation in Khagrachhari remains under control, adding that Chattogram Hill Tracts (CHT) Adviser Supradip Chakma is monitoring developments on the ground.
Yesterday, three people were killed and more than 16 were injured during clashes in Guimara, despite Section 144 being in force.
Among the injured were 13 army personnel and three policemen, according to a statement from the home ministry.
The unrest began on 24 September, when Jumma Chhatra-Janata called for the punishment of those allegedly involved in the gang rape of a Marma schoolgirl in the Singinala area of Khagrachhari Sadar on 23 September.
In demand for their arrest, Jumma Chhatra-Janata called a second day-long road blockade on 27 September.
Yesterday, protesters reportedly set fire to Ramesu Bazar in Guimara, burning several shops and damaging nearby homes.
Witnesses also reported gunfire during clashes with security forces earlier in the day.
Law enforcement agencies have since stepped up patrols across the tense hill district.
