Police cannot detain people just for expressing views: PM
He cautions leaders and activists against developing a sense of entitlement due to being in power
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today (2 May) said law enforcement agencies must not detain people simply for expressing their views, stressing that citizens should be able to speak freely about their problems.
"People should be able to speak if they face any problem. Saying something and then being picked up by police – no, this cannot continue. People do not want this," he said while addressing a meeting with party leaders and activists at the Sylhet Shilpakala Academy this evening.
Tarique, also the BNP chairman, added that legal action should only be taken if someone commits a crime. "If anyone commits an offence, action will be taken in accordance with the law – that is a different matter."
Referring to the large turnout at the programme, the prime minister said not everyone present was a BNP supporter, but many joined because they believe the party remains "on the right track."
"To retain this support, we must work hard and be willing to make sacrifices," he told party members.
Tarique cautioned leaders and activists against developing a sense of entitlement due to being in power. "Do not think you are part of the ruling party. The moment you do, it will lead to downfall," he warned.
Looking ahead to upcoming local government elections, the prime minister said the party must nominate candidates in all areas and strengthen its organisational base beforehand.
He also urged party members to ensure their behaviour does not alienate the public and instructed them to strictly maintain party discipline.
