PM says govt to consider forming Cumilla division, hints at agri university
Speaking at a roadside rally in Lakshmipur of Barura upazila, he said it will be implemented if it reflects public demand.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today (16 May) said there is a demand for the formation of a Cumilla division and the government will consider it, while also hinting at establishing an agricultural university.
Speaking at a roadside rally in Lakshmipur of Barura Upazila, he said it will be implemented if it reflects public demand.
Tarique said the government has waived interest and related dues for 12 lakh farmers whose agricultural loans were within Tk10,000 and has started implementing election pledges gradually.
He said Cumilla is agriculture-based and that locals have demanded an agricultural university.
The prime minister said he will soon meet the education minister to discuss establishing it, while asking for patience as the economy is under pressure.
He said Bangladesh has been held back over the past 17 years, noting that independence in 1971 was achieved through sacrifice, but progress lagged due to authoritarian rule.
He also referred to the July Uprising, saying young people gave their lives for democracy and that national rebuilding is needed.
Tarique said he will visit Chandpur for canal excavation work and Family Card distribution, adding these were election commitments.
He also said work has started to honour imams and religious leaders, adding that all promises will be implemented step by step, urging people to remain patient.
Earlier, in Laksham's Mudaffarganj in Cumilla, he pledged family cards for 50 lakh women within one year, with allocations included in the budget.
