The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has rescued a Bangladeshi man who was being held captive allegedly by human traffickers in Libya.

The victim, Syed Abdus Salam, 42, is a resident of Kholshi village under Bagherpara Police Station in Jashore.

In a press release issued today (22 September), PBI stated that Salam returned home and gave a statement to the court today.

The victim's neighbour, accused Nawab Ali, promised to send him to Romania and then to Italy at a cost of Tk4 lakh. In March this year, he was taken to Dubai, then held in Libya after a brief stopover in Egypt.

After being held captive for 20-22 days, Nawab Ali handed Salam over to other unknown individuals for onward transmission to Italy. These individuals then demanded a ransom of Tk15 lakh.

When the family realised that Salam was being held hostage, they filed a case with the court on 2 May, the release reads.

Upon receiving the court order to investigate the case, PBI Jashore found that Salam was being held captive by the accused Nawab Ali, an alleged member of the human trafficking ring operating abroad, in Libya.

Later, Nawab facilitated a video call between the victim and the investigating officer of the case.

Subsequently, Nawab Ali arranged for Salam's return to Bangladesh, it added.
