84% of citizens feel safe walking alone in their neighbourhoods after dark: BBS Survey

A total of 84.81% of citizens overall reported feeling safe walking alone in their neighbourhoods after dark, according to a recent survey by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).
Only 80.67% of women said they feel safe walking alone at night, significantly lower than the 89.53% of men who expressed the same.
The findings, released today (19 June) through the Citizen Perception Survey (CPS), highlight the ongoing challenges women face in accessing and experiencing safety in public spaces.
A slight rural-urban divide was also observed. Around 85.30% citizens in rural areas reported a higher sense of safety compared to their urban counterparts when walking alone after sunset, which is 83.75%.
The survey further indicates a strong sense of security within people's own homes after dark, with 92.54% of respondents stating they feel safe at home during the evening hours.
However, the report notes a discrepancy in this regard as well- 90.05% of men feel safe at home at night, compared to 91.82% of women.
