More than 41,000 families were stranded as their homes, rural roads, and educational institutions across the Noakhali district have submerged due to heavy rainfall over the past several days.

Talking to BSS, Noakhali Deputy Commissioner Khandaker Istiak Ahmed today (11 July) said due to relentless rainfall, a total of 41,840 families have been stranded.

He informed that district administration has already prepared a total of 466 shelters in the district as a cautionary measure.

A total of 2,03,100 people of the district have been affected by the fresh flood, caused by heavy rainfall and water flowing from upstream, and around 40 houses have been destroyed, he added.

Waterlogging is seen in most areas of the district including Maijdee specially the Deputy Commissioner's Office, fisheries office, Jail Khana Road and municipal market road have been flooded.

As the water drainage system is still not effective in many areas, water has accumulated in houses and roads. As a result, working people and vehicle drivers are suffering.

Delwar Hossain, a resident of the Andarchar Union under Sadar upazila said there has been no rain since yesterday evening (10 July) until this morning.

"However, there is still water in the streets and courtyards of various houses. Due to the poor drainage system, the water is receding slowly. Due to this, although the rain has reduced, the suffering of the town residents has not reduced. Most of the roads in low-lying areas of various upazilas, including the district town of Maijdee, are still under water," he added.

Deputy Commissioner Khandaker Istiak Ahmed said they are working on drainage issues and hoped that the waterlogging situation will improve soon.
