Bangladesh Bank and NRBC Bank today (21 July) organised the Bangla QR Fair 2026 in Chattogram to promote cashless transactions and encourage wider adoption of the Bangla QR payment system under the "One Country, One QR" initiative.
The event, held at the Bangladesh Bank Chattogram office premises, began with a rally that passed through major roads in the port city before returning to the venue.
Visitors also witnessed live demonstrations of digital transactions, with participating small businesses accepting payments through Bangla QR.
A discussion session held as part of the fair focused on the benefits of digital payments and the importance of expanding cashless transactions across the country.
Speakers said that since the nationwide launch of the "One Country, One QR" initiative on 1 July, customers of all banks and mobile financial service (MFS) providers have been able to make payments using a single QR code, making digital transactions more convenient and interoperable.
Bangladesh Bank Chattogram Office Executive Director and Head Md Hanif Miah attended the event as chief guest, while NRBC Bank Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Dr Md Touhidul Alam Khan was present as special guest. Senior officials from Bangladesh Bank and NRBC Bank also attended the programme.
Addressing the event, Dr Touhidul Alam Khan said building a cashless ecosystem goes beyond modernising the payment system and contributes to financial inclusion, good governance, transparency and accountability.
He said Bangla QR has made digital payments simpler, safer and more transparent, adding that NRBC Bank is working to expand its use among marginalised communities by offering affordable services to merchants.
He also said the initiative could contribute to achieving at least six Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including poverty reduction, gender equality, decent work and economic growth, industry, innovation and infrastructure, reduced inequalities, and peace, justice and strong institutions.
"The 'One Country, One QR' initiative is creating equal digital financial opportunities for everyone, regardless of income, and will also support the vision of a Smart Bangladesh," he said.
Speaking at the programme, Md Hanif Miah said the use of Bangla QR under the "One Country, One QR" initiative has been mandatory nationwide since 1 July as part of Bangladesh Bank's efforts to build a cashless economy.
He said customers can now make payments using any bank's mobile banking app or MFS app by scanning the same QR code, whether at roadside shops, neighbourhood stores or large shopping malls.
Recalling the country's digital transformation, Hanif Miah said instant 24/7 interbank fund transfers, once considered unimaginable, can now be completed within milliseconds due to technological advancements and the collective efforts of stakeholders in Bangladesh's financial and ICT sectors.
