President of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad and freedom fighter Ayesha Khanam passed away early Saturday. She was 74.

The heroic freedom fighter Ayesha, who had been suffering from cancer, breathed her last during the early hours today, according to a Facebook post of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad.

She was an active organiser in the student movement of 1962, the mass uprising in 1969, and fought in the great liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971.

After the independence of Bangladesh, Ayesha Khanam dedicated herself to work for the rights of deprived, oppressed, and disenfranchised women of the country.

She will be buried at her family graveyard in Netrakona district.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of President of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad and freedom fighter Ayesha Khanam.

In a condolence message, Sheikh Hasina said that with the death of this woman leader, the women's society of the country lost a genuine friend and a brave comrade. She prayed for the eternal salvation of the departed soul and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family.

President M Abdul Hamid also expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of President of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad Ayesha Khanam.

The president recalled the contribution of Ayesha Khanam as a brave fighter for the women's rights movement and assured that her contribution will forever be remembered.

President M Abdul Hamid also prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
